Top Snacks to Eat in the Netherlands Before You Die

The list of things to try in the Netherlands seems like and endless list. So much to do, so many things to eat, to explore and yet so little time. However, one of the things that you MUST try while you’re visiting the Netherlands is their food. I’ve never eating food as delicious as the one I had in the Netherlands. I’ve tried as many things as possible in just 3 weeks and I can definitely recommend some of my top favorite ones.

Stroopwafels (Syrup Waffles)

I first saw these bad boys a lot on social media. People were constantly posting pictures of these treats and I was always so curious what they were and how they tasted like. Once I found out that they were sold in the Netherlands I knew I had to give them a try. After I had a single bite I just couldn’t stop myself from having more. My boyfriend had to even take my card away from me because I kept buying more and more! You should definitely eat some stroopwaffles.

Poffertjes (Pancake Puffs)

“The US might call them “dollar pancakes”, but in the Netherlands they are poffertjes. Small, light, fluffy pancakes made with yeast and buckwheat flour. Typically served with powdered sugar and butter, but I prefer them with lemon and sugar.  They can be found fresh in street food stalls, on a café menu and also pre-made in supermarkets”. Hagel slag (Chocolate Sprinkles)

When I first heard of this snack I wasn’t too fond with the idea of having chocolate sprinkles on my butter toast. However, the high amount of popularity this treat had made me curious to its taste. My boyfriend decided to buy for both of us to try in case we didn’t like it. I was the first one to give it a try and well, let’s just say erm… he didn’t even have the chance to try them. It was so good that I didn’t even let him have some. I can definitely understand why people consider it the Dutch version of Nutella.

Speculaas

These are best enjoyed with a nice warm cup of coffee early in the morning. I actually didn’t have the chance to buy these while visiting the Netherlands. My sister actually brought me some from her trip and they were simply delicious.

Boerenkool Stamppot (Kale & Mashed Potatoes)

This creamy, buttery mashed potato with kale and accompanied with a fat smoked sausage (rook worst) were one of my favorite things while I was at the Netherlands.
